Sutter Hospitals in Sacramento Region Receive A’s for Patient Safety from The Leapfrog Group

SACRAMENTO –Sutter Health Sacramento Sierra Region received straight-A’s today, as all six
hospitals in the region were honored with Hospital Safety Scores of “A” by The Leapfrog Group,
an independent national nonprofit run by employers and other large purchasers of health benefits.
The A scores were awarded in the latest update to the Hospital Safety ScoreSM, the A, B, C, D or
F scores assigned to U.S. hospitals based on preventable medical errors, injuries accidents and
infections. The Hospital Safety Score was compiled under the guidance of the nation’s leading
experts on patient safety and is designed to give the public information they can use to protect
themselves and their families.

“Our region places considerable focus on safety, whether it is the region-wide adoption of ceiling
lifts or following best practices and protocols for glycemic control, sepsis and central line-
associated bloodstream infections, to name just a few,” said James Conforti, regional president of
Sutter Health Sacramento Sierra Region. “The teamwork and skillful thinking of our clinicians
and staff have made such a great impact on patient safety. Their actions and disciplined approach
to applying best practices have made a real difference to our patients.”

The hospitals in the Sacramento Sierra Region, which all received A grades, are:
• Sutter Amador Hospital
• Sutter Auburn Faith Hospital
• Sutter Davis Hospital
• Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento, which includes both Sutter General and Sutter
Memorial hospitals
• Sutter Roseville Medical Center
• Sutter Solano Medical Center

“Hospitals like these that earn an A have demonstrated their commitment to their patients and
their community,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “I congratulate
all of the Sutter hospitals in the Sacramento Sierra Region for their safety excellence, and look
forward to the day when all hospitals will match this standard.”

Calculated under the guidance of The Leapfrog Group’s nine-member Blue Ribbon Expert
Panel, the Hospital Safety Score uses 26 measures of publicly available hospital safety data
to produce a single score representing a hospital’s overall capacity to keep patients safe from
infections, injuries and medical and medication errors. The panel includes: John Birkmeyer

Arnold Millstein (Stanford University), Peter Pronovost (Johns Hopkins University), Patrick
