Sutter Amador Hospital Receives Baby-Friendly Designation

Sutter Amador Hospital has been named a Baby-Friendly hospital by Baby-Friendly USA, meeting the highest international standards for providing optimal care for breastfeeding mothers and their infants.

A Baby-Friendly designation is given to select hospitals worldwide recognizing birth facilities that offer breastfeeding mothers the information, confidence and skills needed to successfully initiate and continue breastfeeding their babies.

“Our outpatient Sutter Women’s Services Center staff have collaborated extensively with the Family Birth Center to provide a program of prenatal education necessary to achieve the challenging Baby-Friendly designation,” said Diane Hosmer, R.N., MSN IBCLC of Sutter Medical Foundation, Women’s Services Center. “Baby-Friendly status outlines important practices for all new families using the baby’s natural instincts for the best start to life.”

As a baby-friendly hospital, Sutter Amador Hospital provides new parents with the most current information early in pregnancy so families can make well informed choices for their babies and to assist them in developing the support systems they will need when their child is born.

“Our goal is to facilitate the best birth experience possible for every mother and newborn,” said Laura Cooper RNC, manager of the Sutter Amador Family Birth Center. “To promote bonding and support breastfeeding, we advocate skin to skin and provide newborn care in the mothers’ rooms throughout the hospital stay.”

Nationwide, Baby-Friendly USA, Inc. has designated less than 500 hospitals as Baby-Friendly. The Baby-Friendly designation is given after a rigorous on-site survey.

“We were able to accomplish this change of culture through education and the commitment of staff throughout many departments, our leadership team and our physicians,” stated Jane Snyder, R.N., IBCLC.  “This truly was a team effort with the focus on what is best for the baby.”

Every year, nearly 300 babies are delivered at Sutter Amador Hospital and more than 30,000 across the Sutter Health network. Sutter Amador Hospital joins three other Sutter Health facilities to receive the Baby-Friendly designation including Sutter Davis Hospital, Sutter Maternity and Surgery Center, Santa Cruz and Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento. This month, Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento received a five-year reaccreditation of their Baby-Friendly status.

Baby-Friendly USA, Inc. is the U.S. authority for the implementation of the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative, a global program sponsored by the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children’s Fund.
