Sutter Amador Hospital and other Sutter Health Employees Train for Mass Casualty Incidents

JACKSON, CA – Forty-eight employees from several Sutter Health affiliates, including Sutter Amador Hospital, have trained to provide medical emergency response to disasters. This group of employees included nursing, ancillary services, administration and support services.

These employees completed the Healthcare Leadership for Mass Casualty Incidents training at the Center for Domestic Preparedness (CDP) in Anniston, Ala. They learned ways to effectively respond, and recover from real-world incidents involving natural disasters, terrorism and other hazardous material accidents.

Local resident and Sutter Amador Hospital Director of Ancillary Services, Kim Vagt, says she came away from the training with a better understanding of the need for hands-on training for emergencies. “This training helps us to care for our patients better and to assist the community better during a catastrophic event.”

The CDP develops and delivers advanced training for emergency response providers, emergency managers and other government officials from state, local and tribal governments. The CDP offers more than 50 training courses, focusing on incident management, mass casualty response and emergency response to a catastrophic natural disaster or terrorist act. This training, held at the CDP campus, is federally funded at no cost to state, local and tribal emergency response participants or their organization.

As a heath care facility it’s especially important for Sutter Amador Hospital to be prepared to respond to emergencies, disasters and other catastrophic events that may happen in the community. The hospital performs emergency drills several times a year to prepare. However, the CDP training reinforces critical thinking skills and confidence to respond effectively to local incidents or potential Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) events.

Staff came from Sutter Amador Hospital, as well as Alta Bates Summit Medical Center, Kahi Mohala Behavioral Health, Memorial Hospital, Mills Peninsula, Novato Community Hospital, Sutter Auburn Faith, Sutter Coast, Sutter Health corporate, Sutter Medical Center Sacramento, and Sutter Roseville Medical Center.

About the Center for Domestic Preparedness

The CDP is operated by the Unites States Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency and is the only federally-chartered Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) Training facility in the nation.

Information about CDP training programs can be found at http://cdp.dhs.gov.  Visit the “News & Media” tab at the top of the site to download images, share CDP training articles and find out what others are saying about CDP training. For more information on the CDP, contact the CDP External Affairs Office, at (256) 847-2212/2316 or email pao@cdpemail.dhs.gov
